War in Iraq vs Containment
This is a very detailed cost-benefit analysis of the costs of invading Iraq compared to the continuation of a containment policy. It notably lacks any discussion of the need to "drain the swamps" but nevertheless concludes that going to war provided economic and humanitarian benefits (for both the Iraqis *and* the US) that far outweighed the costs of continuing the old policy. Prepared for the CESifo Conference on “Guns and Butter: The Economic Causes and Consequences of Conflict” held in Munich, Germany on December 9 and 10, 2005. This study is a revised version of an analytical essay circulated by the authors shortly before the March 2003 invasion of Iraq.
